“I was 17 years old when I landed my first job in the Aviation Industry – a cabin crew member! Until then, jobs in the Aviation Industry were often looked down upon since no one in my family had ventured this far. So, suffice to say, there was a heavy backlash from many but my biggest gift in this life – my parents – stood with me and let me pursue this profession.
For someone who was brought up in Coimbatore and Kerala, Chennai to me will always be special since it was here that I had some of the most profound moments of my life. Chennai has played a major role both with respect to my personal development as well as my career and it continues to play a very major role in my life!
Cut to 2020, I have spent close to 12 years in this Industry and the best part of it with the wonderful management of Indigo Airlines! For all the misconceptions people hold about air hostesses in general, I would just like to say that, our job goes way beyond our dressing and looks! We are possibly the only members of the society who work all through the year – through all the festivals, birthdays, anniversaries and many more special days.
And what’s more? On air, working closely with the cabin crew team, dealing with passengers from different walks of life, coordinating with the various staff members – from the bus driver to the person manning the baggage carousel – it is one of the most powerful positions of responsibility! But we brave it all with a polite smile, a friendly compliment here and there and a cheerful spirit.
Most often than not, passengers remember us from the time they travel with us and go the extra mile to drop a kind note or two to appreciate our work and time; and other times, there have been colleagues whom I have never met, shaking hands with me to congratulate and say that my reputation precedes me.
I still remember the day I went in for a shoot for the Indigo inflight magazine on the day of my wedding reception because, my CEO requested me to! These past few years have been the most eventful days of my life and I have watched people grow and progress into different roles in front of my own eyes!
Working in this pandemic does come with its own pitfalls and fright and fear, but for an organisation which has given me everything, I couldn’t bring myself to say no! I pitched in to be a part of the cabin crew for a rescue flight and we have been working all through the last month or so.
While its one thing to judge people for flying in a pandemic, people fly for their own reasons! And even more than that, its because of travellers that organisations are able to stay in business and we are able to make our earnings!
I have been asked some insensitive questions pertaining to my career and my personal life – sometimes in the most accusatory tone! But my blessings often outweigh the negativity that comes in! I have learnt to keep my head held high and give in my sincere dedicated efforts to the job for its you who defines the job and not the other way around!”
