“What happens when choosing yourself means losing everything you once called home?
I was not raised to believe in myself. I was raised to question who I was. Growing up in a musically renowned family, I was surrounded by talent but never felt like I belonged. I was constantly compared and judged for my appearance, my abilities, and my worth. Over time, I began to believe that I was simply not enough.
While I carried this silence within me, I was also enduring harassment from my paternal grandfather. I did not know how to speak about it or who would stand beside me if I did.
When I finally found the courage to speak up during college, my family responded with silence. In that moment, something within me broke, but something also awakened. They chose comfort over truth, and I understood that if I wanted a different life, I had to choose myself.
A turning point came when I began learning classical dance under Guru Dr. Madhavi Mallampalli. For the first time, I experienced strength, expression, and confidence within myself. These were emotions I had never been allowed to feel before. Five years later, I performed my arangetram in front of the same people who once doubted me. I was not seeking validation. I was fulfilling a promise I had made to myself.
A true Guru sees your potential even when you cannot. They guide you through uncertainty and help you grow into who you are meant to be. I feel grateful to have such guidance in my life.
I tried to make my family understand me, but when that failed, I chose to respond through action. Walking away was not just leaving a house. It was letting go of every label that had been placed on me and every voice that told me I could not stand on my own.
But stepping out was only the beginning. Choosing yourself does not end with leaving. It begins with rebuilding.
And rebuilding asks everything of you.
Rebuilding a life from nothing is not a single act of courage. It is a decision you make every single day.
Standing strong did not come naturally to me. It came from choosing myself again and again, even when it felt uncomfortable and uncertain. Life outside was not easy, but it was my life, and that made all the difference.
I moved cities, worked as an Ayurvedic doctor, taught Carnatic music, and earned every rupee with dignity. Slowly, I began to build a life that felt like my own.
As a single woman in Chennai, I rented a small apartment, adopted two dogs, and created a space where I finally felt safe. Alongside this, I began caring for stray animals and birds around me. I chose to offer compassion where it was needed, even when others did not understand.
There were also challenges within my community that tested me. I chose not to step back. I remained steady. Over time, I bought my own home in the same apartment. It became a quiet reminder that strength cannot be silenced and that a woman who stands her ground cannot be pushed aside.
Today, I run my own wellness centre, Brahma Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, along with a wellness café, Griham Food from our roots. Both were built entirely on my own without any financial support from my family.
I continue my work in Ayurveda and teach Carnatic music to students across the world, but I remain a student at heart. Life is not about proving anything to others. It is about evolving within.
Success is not measured only by money. It is reflected in who you become. It is the dignity of standing on your own, the courage to keep learning, and the strength to rebuild yourself again and again.
I share this not just as my story, but as a reminder. For anyone who feels unheard or alone, strength often begins quietly within.
When you take that first step and continue despite fear, something begins to change.
With time, patience, and belief, you can build a life that is truly your own.”
