“Writing has been my thing for as long as I can remember. Growing up and studying in Chennai, I pursued Visual Communications for my undergrad. Like most, I took the “safe” route and joined a bank, where I handled customer service. Strangely enough, even there, writing never left me. I spent most of my day replying to emails, but deep down, I knew I didn’t belong in that world.
A colleague’s referral changed everything. I joined a production house with Vijay TV and began writing scripts, my very first being a tribute to Vaali sir. Soon, I was working as a content producer with Vijay TV, scripting for award shows, audio launches, and television programs. For 2 to 3 years, my words found their way into countless shows, but destiny had more in store.
When Covid struck, time slowed down, and I finally had space to write for myself. I penned Tamil lyrics for Malare from Premam, just for fun. But fate works in mysterious ways. During a recording, playback singer Sathyaprakash read it and encouraged me to write original songs. That’s when I wrote ‘Karmugile’. He loved it and soon asked for a peppy track, for which I wrote ‘Vaaren Odi Vaaren’. Released at the right time, when indie music was blossoming, it became a hit. From there, I wrote over ten songs for him alone.
Collaboration became my greatest strength. With Anivee, I created Imaigalo, another big success, followed by Nila Mugam sung by Sam Vishal. With composer Sanjay, I wrote Thooradhe Thooradhe and Sikki Mukki, the latter even making it to the Goa Film Festival. And with Sujith Benjamin, Yaarivalo became a hit. Since 2020, I’ve written around 45 independent songs, alongside film work.
But this wasn’t an overnight journey. It began back in college when I won a poetry competition that sparked my love for words. Even as I worked jobs, I continued writing on the side, until finally, I quit to chase writing full-time. Two years later, the journey has been rewarding, though full of challenges.
Today, I juggle scriptwriting, songwriting, dubbing, and subtitling. I believe lyrics still matter in a world chasing instant hits, and I write with that responsibility. The road ahead is sometimes hopeful and sometimes gives us experiences, but I have no regrets – because I’m doing what I love most: writing!”
