“Most often than not, the profession of being an air hostess isn’t associated with hard work at all. The parochial outlook is too prevalent that people don’t consider it a serious job. But the occupational requisites that we have to conform to, are far too many to count!
My drift into this field was completely unplanned. I remember applying for the position without any prior knowledge or experience but still ended up getting shortlisted. I got selected as one of the top 10 candidates out of a pool of 300 applicants. Despite a lingering wonder on what made the recruiter choose me, I was happy beyond words!
The job, however, wasn’t as easy as people presumed it to be. Each of us in the cabin crew had to attend to a minimum of 3-4 flights in a twenty-four hour period. Our work extended even during festivals and national holidays, with sleep and food cycles going for a major toss. I still remember the times I had to go for work at 1-2 AM based on my shift. Not to mention, there were frequent practical exams on passenger safety for which I had to study for months as they were exceptionally difficult to clear. Nevertheless, my love for what I did that made me thoroughly enjoy all these aspects and steer through any difficulties!
Looking back, my eleven-year journey in the aviation industry has truly given me some incredible memories. One that stands out, is an incident where I offered my meal for a hungry passenger who didn’t have the Indian currency. That small gesture got rewarded with a wonderful feedback and massive gift hamper that was subsequently couriered to my house.
Even my milieu that once made derisive remarks have developed a newfound respect for my occupation after seeing the amount of sacrifice that goes into it.
But the most remarkable part of it all is that the industry helped me meet my closest friend, who I eventually fell for, head over heels. Today I fly high, with the best man in the world for a husband and I can assure you, there’s no better feeling than that!”
