“I grew up in a small village and felt burdened by expectations from a young age. My family had high hopes for my future, but their aspirations did not align with my own. My decision to study Social Work left them feeling let down. However, my family understood the importance of my goals and dreams.
While attending college in Chennai, I found my passion for makeup and art. It was a means of liberation, a method of self-expression that felt more authentic than anything else. Even though I grew up in the countryside, I fully embraced the lively fashion culture of the city and ultimately obtained a diploma in makeup artistry.
As I delved further into the realm of cosmetics, I also started to discover more about myself and my identity. In my early twenties, I became a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and it felt like discovering a second family. They supported me in developing my self-confidence and gaining a deeper understanding of myself. At first, I offered to help without pay, but before long, I found myself leading groups and having a major influence.
In 2019, I founded the Magzihvan Foundation, aimed at supporting both LGBTQ+ and heterosexual individuals and families. The recognition and appreciation I received for my work were overwhelming. Although I’ve paused my official social work, I continue to help people behind the scenes, driven by self-satisfaction.
Becoming genderqueer was a process that involved a personal journey. For me, the realization of not conforming to the traditional labels of male or female was a freeing moment. In 2015, my identity became widely known after my story was featured in a well-known magazine. My family discovered the news in the article, which caused six months of painful silence and tension.
It was difficult dealing with the miscommunication within my family, especially between me and my mom. She was concerned about my sexual orientation and identity. After I expressed my genuine emotions, she started to stand by me. Obtaining acceptance was difficult, but it was incredibly meaningful to me.
Being a proud genderqueer person, I’m a makeup artist and entrepreneur in the organic skin care industry with my business called ‘Mafy’. Additionally, I am the founder of an organization.
What I learned from my journey is that it’s not necessary to rush to define yourself or conform to a specific category. Take as much time as you need to discover and comprehend your own identity. Life is all about being true to yourself and discovering your genuine identity, regardless of how much time it may require.”
