“The Nakuras are a tribe who are originally from the Mewar region of Rajasthan. And as nomadic tribes, they have spread across India and in Tamil Nadu, they are popularly known as ‘Nari Kuravargal’. My initial tryst with them began when I met Mr. Deva while doing my masters in Madras School Of Social Work. So when I first started researching about the tribe, I was incredibly fascinated with their history and their beautiful work. They have excellent taste in designing jewellery and they are best known for their handiwork. But, from a societal perspective, they are not given the due respect they deserve and oftentimes, they don’t have proper access to education, sanitation and sometimes a decent life. So myself, along with Deva, joined hands and started approaching these people on a regular basis, trying to give them a platform for them to exhibit their work and earn their fair share. For when they try to sell on their own, they fall hopeless bait to bargaining. And after an arduous 6 months of time, they eventually warmed up to us and we launched ‘Project Nakuras’, an online platform to exhibit the work of the members of this community.
Furthermore, we collaborated with members from NIFT and offered training in communication and designing to these people. We are currently working with the tribe members from different areas of Chennai and some parts of Namakkal, Kolli hills. It has of course been a fascinating journey and social entrepreneurship is a thing I have come to feel so passionate about. Hoping to spread our wings and our wave of awareness to every nook and corner of the world.”
