“Being a last bencher in school, the concept of mugging up to score high didn’t appeal to me. Naturally, during my twelfth grade, I struggled hard to barely pass my board exams. Years flew by and fast-forwarding to the end of college, I found myself in a fix. The management didn’t permit me to sit for placements since I had two backlogs and it became an increasingly pressurizing time.
All this, got me introspecting only to clearly realize that I am not cut out for a traditional corporate job in the engineering industry. However, shifting to a new field meant that I had to develop my skill-sets from scratch. But nevertheless, I decided to take the plunge and immersed myself completely into self-learning. Youtube and other online courses became my teachers. At the same time, I also took up a variety of internships which exposed me further to a world of knowledge and also helped me discover my love for travelling.
Soon afterwards, I saw my efforts pay off when I got selected in a well-reputed Digital agency. The next four years was me juggling the various aspects of my job whilst co-managing my very own travel company. My passion for the work made the hustle completely worth it! I was able to improve one skill upon another and eventually got confident enough to explore on my own. Now, it has been over two years since I quit my job and started taking individual projects. The feeling of being your own boss is indeed unmatchable!
Moreover, my lifetime dream of having a career trajectory that’s fully skill-based where I had the luxury to pick projects I am interested in, finally felt achieved. Of course, operating individually does come with its own risks but it’s very fulfilling at the end of the day!
Another moment of complete surprise was when my peers, who were all toppers, settled in well-paying jobs also expressed their desire to go solo like me. My heart heaved a sigh of pride, for it was the same backbencher, whom teachers had given up on, now being looked up to for his achievements!”
