“I am a toy seller and I shuttle between Hyderabad and Chennai for selling toys and other miscellaneous items like Diyas and ceramic bowls and jars. Before we moved to the business of toy selling, we were in the field of farming. But due to severe droughts and reduced rainfall rates, we were forced to move to Chennai to make a livelihood for ourselves. Compared to the Madras I saw over 30 years ago; the city has grown ten folds over what it used to be. We hardly had any vehicles or means of transport then but its’ amazing how the city has progressed. As far as my challenges go, I often feel bad due to my inability to visit temples. We live a life of a gypsy so there aren’t much bath facilities or room facilities available. So, I just confine my prayers to my heart and pray whenever I can wherever I am. As Navratri draws to a close, we will move our business to Madurai to sell products curated for that city. My children are now well settled in jobs and they come to visit me occasionally. With all these years of hard work, my grandsons and grand daughters are now pursing higher studies in eminent institutions in the city. I am happy that I am able to provide the luxury I didn’t have growing up, to the next generation of family members. Life goes on no matter what and you just learn to go with the flow with a smile on your face”
