“Hailing from the picturesque state of Kerala, my journey led me to the bustling city of Chennai, where I currently work as a stylist in one of the salons. I realize I’ve dedicated over a decade to perfecting the art of hairstyling.
My story took an unconventional turn when, after 10th grade, I made the bold decision to quit my formal education and dive into the world of hair styling. Back then, I was unaware of the uncertainty about which educational path to choose, and my lack of clarity made me choose a different path apart from studying further. Surprisingly, my parents supported my decision, but with the condition that I remain proactive in the path that I decide to take.
I feared during my initial stages. I had none to guide me in my passion. I had no contacts, no idea, no book, nothing. I had only passion and some experience. Joining the industry during its peak presented both challenges and opportunities. Despite my anxieties, I held onto my self-belief, confident in my ability to turn my passion into a successful career.
To enhance my skills, I enrolled in styling academies in Chennai and pursued a course in Mumbai. Through conviction and hard work, I secured opportunities to collaborate with prestigious brands, marking significant milestones in my career. At the age of 27, I am proud of my accomplishments, yet I remain constant in the search for my unfulfilled dreams.
Choosing a divergent path from the norm, far from the familiar comforts of family and friends, was undeniably adventurous. However, the key lies in recognizing one’s capacity to navigate challenges and emerge stronger. I had so many ‘What if I fail’ moments, but my goal to become one of the best stylists in the town, kept pushing me to explore more learnings. My advice to those contemplating a similar journey: embrace it with hope, determination, and commitment to continuous learning. When I started as a hair stylist, I’m not sure if people welcomed men like me; but now, with my experience in handling the scissors, I can confidently say that, “YES – I’m a professional and I’m a proud hair stylist.”
The road less traveled may be tough, but the rewards are immeasurable for those who hang on. Believe in yourself!”
