“Starting work right from the age of 17, it barely took me a year to decide that the food industry was my calling. I hail from Bihar, where my father is a blacksmith, and my mother, like other women, took care of the household. We had little means to afford anything beyond three square meals, and with the passage of time, that became a major factor to make me want to move out of my village. You see, the fascination towards city life is something all villagers have and I was no different. Cities were viewed as the one-stop-shop for greatness, and I aspired to experience life there too. But being the only child, this got my parents in a bit of a fix.
On one hand, they wanted me to support them and continue our generations-old skill of coppersmithing, especially since it was dying to modernity. On the other, they too were eager to see me live my dream and become a proud city man. Now ultimately, my preference did take precedence and in no time I proceeded to the city that had already uplifted a bunch of our folks- Chennai!
Over here, I joined a popular food stall, known for selling South Indian classics. Today, I operate all 7 days in a week, and there’s still an unexplainable sense of freedom I feel. The happiness whenever I step into our shop makes me feel like it’s my own. I guess that’s what has aided me to keep going for over 5 years now. What’s even better is to get a taste of our best sellers occasionally, once we are done for the day. My favourite is the ‘Family Dosa.’ As the name suggests, it occupies an entire table and is filled with various portions of delicious masalas that I look forward to having, once in a while.
Now as far as the customers are concerned, I love serving them with a smile. We have people from different walks of life and mindsets stepping in for a plate of their favourite treats and I believe it’s my responsibility to match up to their taste and hygiene expectations. In the end, my role in this city, is after all, directly connected to satiating the stomach isn’t it?”
