“I was born in Trichy as the first son in an agricultural family with two other siblings. Our dad wanted to enroll us at the best school in our nearby town and to get us out of the farming profession. I went on to complete my graduation in Amrita University, Coimbatore. Later I flew to Australia for my post-graduation. For someone who grew up with 7 people in a noisy household, Australia’s deserted streets and its eerie calmness felt alien. I didn’t apply for my Permanent residency and returned back to India. After a few months, I got selected as one among the 16 candidates in a nationwide eligibility test to join a niche telecom R&D lab in Chennai. It was a fascinating stream of work on a technology which was new to India. I got settled in Chennai away from the village life.
I discovered nature treks during this period. I felt calm and at peace when surrounded by nature and started longing for these trips. Then one day I realized that I had been searching for my dose of nature somewhere outside while abandoning the centuries of farming-connect my ancestors had. I decided to try my hands in organic farming. I went back to my family and discussed to take up organic farming. After much deliberation, Dad relented and gave 1 acre of land for the experiment. We planted paddy with neem and cow dung supplements. It was a disaster and we got 1/4th of the usual fertilizer laden output. But we persisted and now in its fourth year, the land is back to its true form. We now produce a surplus than the neighboring inorganic fertilizer crops! We currently deliver to only a close group of friends and families who book almost a year in advance.
In a strange turn of events, I’m now pursuing the vocation which my family so much wanted me to refrain from. But I’m confident now to scale up the family operation with better technology and a sustainable insight. Someday I hope to settle down in a fully- sustainable-organic-farm with a solar-charged-Tesla car!”
