“From a society that thinks fashion and craft as a taboo, from a society that thinks women are bound to certain culture and lifestyle I was born to defy every norm there is! Certainly, with tremendous support from my parents, I moved out of the bubble, to pursue my passion for design. Graduating as a product designer from NIFT Chennai was one of the milestones in my life and thought me a lot of things.
And here, participating in a pottery workshop back at bachelors, is when I fell in love with clay. Quitting my 9-5 job as a product designer and moving cities to learn the craft is when I started challenging myself both physically and mentally. I still wanted to deep dive into the material world. Learning pottery was like a moving meditation. Turning that lump of clay into something as functional as plating food for yourself is where I felt the happiness and success. From learning through artisans, manufactures and then finally getting into a professional pottery course at GoldenBridgePottery at Pondicherry was a 2-year long process.
There are a lot of things that this craft has taught me like to be patient, to be a listener, and to be a hard worker! Kicking those wheels and moulding the clay is where I found myself fond of the craft. That’s when my life as an entrepreneur started as well. I started my own brand owing all my love and admiration to the craft and inspirations around me. Designing and still exploring the craft, we offer all handcrafted home decor, dinnerware, and serving ware.
I am still pursuing a master’s in industrial design and freelancing graphic design projects, fighting time, creativity, and opportunities. I love what I do and will try my best to reach and inspire as many people I can. Pottery is now a part of me! The craft itself has shaped and moulded me in many ways! All those failures and mistakes are what keeps me motivating and moving.
So being a designer, freelance graphic designer, and ceramist am always struck to one question, Is life designed or crafted?”
