“From a young age, I knew that breaking free from the constraints of tradition would be an uphill battle. Growing up in Thirunelveli, within a deeply conservative Muslim family, girls’ education opportunities were scarce. However, my father was a visionary. He refused to let societal expectations limit my potential and insisted that I pursue a career in medicine. With my father’s unwavering support and determination, I embarked on a journey that would change my life forever. I was determined to not only become a doctor but excel in my chosen field. The road was not easy, but my parents’ sacrifice and dedication fueled my ambition to study diligently.
I was fortunate to secure a place at a Medical College, where I pursued my undergraduate degree in medicine. Throughout my years of study, I witnessed the immense support and effort my family invested in my success. Their belief in me became my driving force, and I became committed to making them proud. I passed out as the university topper with gold medals.
During my time in medical school, I discovered my passion for gynaecology. The intricacies of women’s health fascinated me, and I delved into extensive research on the subject. When I expressed my desire to specialize in gynaecology, my parents never hesitated to support my aspirations. I learnt my way and joined MS at the most prestigious institute in INDIA- The Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The skill I have today is all attributed to my Alma mater.
Despite the pressure from society, I married during my first year of postgraduate studies at Madras Medical College. My husband, also a doctor specializing in plastic surgery, understood the demands of my profession and provided unwavering support. He encouraged me to pursue my dreams, and together, we navigated the challenges of balancing family life and my education.
Working relentlessly, I dedicated 12 to 16 hours every day to successfully complete my course. Along the way, I discovered I was pregnant, and I embraced the challenge of balancing my studies with impending motherhood. In 2015, I delivered my son, and the following year, I triumphantly completed my exams, where again I passed out as the topper of the University with gold medals. This was just 4 months after the delivery of my son.
Armed with my qualifications, I embarked on my career, initially working as a consultant at hospitals. However, my passion for fertility treatments grew, and I found great empathy in people suffering from fertility issues.
This made me work harder to justify myself as the best reproductive medicine consultant. I realised what gives me happiness and I yearned to establish something of my own. With the support of a friend, I co-founded THE Hive Fertility Clinic and Women Centre at Chetpet in 2017.
Starting a new venture is never easy, and we faced countless hurdles in the beginning. We were apprehensive initially as we were going to compete with a bigger and long-standing chain of fertility units in Chennai. But fueled by our determination and commitment to helping couples struggling with fertility issues, we persisted. We believe everyone deserves a chance at parenthood, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Recognizing the financial barriers faced by lower-income individuals, we worked out ways to offer qualitative and affordable healthcare. Additionally, we identified the challenge of regular checkups for patients living far away and established satellite units across Chennai. These satellite units provided the same level of care and attention at a more accessible location.
Also, we made sure we built a team of young aspiring doctors who were with the same motto as us. We provided quality education and updates to make them more informative and authoritative in their treatment. Our IVF Lab has the most recent advancements on par with the best international Lab.
Over time, our fertility centre flourished. We have 7 units across Chennai. Our dedication to providing affordable and quality care resonated with our patients, and our centre became a beacon of hope for those struggling to conceive. The initial struggles were all worth it when we witnessed the joy on the faces of couples who had finally achieved their dream of starting a family.
This journey has also taught me how to be a good administrator and a successful entrepreneur. The joy of providing jobs and salaries to 50+ families is motivating me to do better work.
None of this would have been possible without the support of my incredible family. My parents and husband stepped up, taking care of our children when I couldn’t be there. Their unwavering support allowed me to focus on developing myself and our fertility centre.
I will always strive to help those facing fertility challenges, regardless of their financial constraints. The joy of helping others experience the miracle of life is a reward that every dream is attainable if we dare to pursue it with unwavering determination.”
