“I got an order to stitch 500 police uniforms in a month’s time and that was a huge push to my career. It was based on my wife’s suggestion that I tried to nudge a few of my contacts in the police department and got this lead. Born and raised in Conoor, I moved to Chennai with my father when he was on a lookout to expand his trade as a tailor. I was barely ten years old at that time but was highly observant of the way he worked and that’s how I picked a few nuances of the art from him.
We were living near Powerhouse in Kodambakkam, when a few tailors and I worked with my father. Most people were skeptical when they knew that I would be working on their clothes as they felt I was too young and might ruin the fabric. My father was a tough guy to work with, probably that’s one reason none of them picked the expertise that he had in the trade. However, I managed to do it and by the time I was 17 I had to take over the business. We moved to Pudupet and I managed to prove my mettle in the neighborhood.
Despite being a teenager, I was flooded with offers to stitch suits, blazers and shirts for the people in the locality. My business was stabilizing and I had a good number of tailors working with me to keep up with the orders. However, that’s when the Readymade business started flourishing and people were thronging to those stores instead of getting their clothes stitched. It got difficult to run the show. That’s around the time I got married and it was my wife who asked me to think big and try approaching the police department to stitch their uniforms. It’s been 21 years since that first big order and I continue to be their go-to person. I am eternally thankful to everyone in the police department who trusted in me.
It feels great when people from across the country come in search of me to get their clothes stitched. Precision in stitching and adhering to the deadline is my USP and in my opinion, that’s what makes my customers love me.”
