“Marriage is one thing that can turn a person’s life around. I was barely 17 when my parents got me married to a boy they didn’t know was an alcoholic and I’ve suffered every day since. When I was young, we lived beside a Brahmin couple who treated me like their own daughter and took care of every need of mine. They had two daughters who were the same age as me and continued to support my family even after I was married. Things couldn’t have been the same without their support. In fact, the ritual of feeding the first morsel of solid food to a baby turning five months old, was performed by them for my son.
About 24 years ago, when my daughter was barely 17 months old, I started a Lemon Soda business with an investment of 1000 rupees. That money was a big deal for me back then and earning an income of 200 to 300 rupees was a dream.
Today, my daughter is married to a nice man who loves her and takes good care of her. My son takes care of me and I live with him. I made sure my children received good education as I did not want to let them suffer the way I did. I also made sure that my daughter married right because marriage has the potential to change a person in the most unimaginable way.”
