“If you ask me what I do for a living—I surprise people.
After completing Mechanical Engineering, I moved to Dubai and worked as a Research Analyst to clear the loans I had taken for my education. But deep down, I always knew I wasn’t built for a 9-to-5 life. Every time I visited Chennai, I’d surprise my friends and family. And that one feeling—the joy on their faces—sparked something I couldn’t ignore.
That’s how ‘Surprise Machi’ was born.
It started with simple handcrafted gifts and gradually became a full-blown mission. I penned down 100 ways to surprise people—customised, heartfelt, unforgettable. I left my job, moved back to Chennai, and told my family I was working remotely, all while crashing at friends’ places and building this dream from scratch.
The beginning was rough. Ideas were appreciated but not many converted. My teammates moved on, but I held on. Then came Covid. And with it, rock bottom. But we pivoted—virtual surprises, custom songs, animated stories, even strangers in WhatsApp groups wishing people. Over 2000 surprises later, we had survived.
Today, we’ve collaborated with media houses, worked with celebrities like MS Dhoni, and created viral moments viewed by millions. But the best stories come from regular people—couples reuniting, families bonding, tears, laughter, joy.
We don’t just deliver surprises. We become part of people’s memories. My Instagram bio says it all: We sell a drug called happiness.
And trust me—there’s no better job in the world.”
