“For as long as I can remember, I have always had a book with me wherever I went! Books to me have been the axis around which my life revolved and I am incredibly blessed to say that, it became my career/ profession in a place I am proud to call my own – Chennai!
I was born and raised in the Gulf but deep down, I had always wanted to set my base in this beautiful city. It so happened that after my schooling, we moved to Chennai for my higher education. Shortly after completing my graduation, while on the lookout for a job, a friend of mine introduced me to a person who was running an institute for training candidates for IELTS exams.
It is true what they say about the law of attraction – whatever you desire, the universe works to bring it to you! We got into a lot of discussions with the institute owner and after finding common ground, it was decided that they would allocate a portion of the institute for me to start my own library!
With the help of my parents and a few close knit friends of mine, we kicked off the library to a grand success. We started to organize a lot of storytelling events and soon the word of our library spread around! As our book collections grew, we along with the management moved to a new place! And this place helped originate the idea for “Silent Reading Sessions”.
A friend of mine and I were meeting up for an event in the Anna Tower Park and he mentioned this idea for reading together and we decided that it would be right to start it in the Anna Tower park. Having worked out the logistics, it was scheduled to be on Saturdays at 6 AM in the morning.
Myself along with my friends would go there taking few books with us. We would spread a few blankets and spread the books on it. People can pick one and read it! The word of this caught up so quickly and very soon we had people participating from different corners of the city.
I still remember this vividly, a friend of mine making an appearance on a rainy Saturday morning! Despite being questioned by the driver who drove, she just came to our session in complete faith that we would be available.
Life to me has been incredibly kind and I have been privileged enough to meet so many people through my sessions. My goal is to continue to spread the joy of reading to each and every person, because there is nothing that a book can’t do for you.”
