“To the world I am a mentally retarded kid but to me, it just means that I experience the world in a way that is exclusive to me. My parents would tell you that I was an extremely violent kid growing up; it was mostly stemming from a dire frustration of being misunderstood but with time, I was put in a special school where I got to mingle with other kids. Here, learning from my peers, my behaviour changed and I started to understand the world dynamics. Slowly, I got into sports and right now, I play pretty much all the athletic games as well as group sports. Whenever I meet someone new, they look on in awe as I tell them that I am a sportsperson. I have two older sisters and they all take good care of me. But I am most close to my youngest sister who takes care of me like her own kid. We have frequent dance parties and she takes me wherever she goes. The world has heavily stigmatised special children and their different abilities but I am glad to have a wonderful family who supports me and takes good care of me. I know the world has many more such unique individuals and my sincere hope is that they all get their deserved place in this world without being reduced into lower mortals. Such a world where we are treated as equals would be more inclusive.”
