“My parents had a love marriage. What came out of that union was a wonderful sister with whom, I have built the life that I have today. But life was not in the least easy for us, atleast in the initial years before our graduation. My dad was a Brahmin and my mum a Muslim, which made us the family outcast.
Since none of the families conceded to this and my parents went ahead with the marriage anyway, our relatives made sure to wash their hands off us. When I was in my 3rd grade, my dad passed away in a sudden heart attack. It was such a huge shock for my mother that she starved herself for close to 7 months. She did not eat anything and her body succumbed to a chronic illness. What transpired were 7 years of her being admitted for treatments and us, two little girls, spending countless hours outside the hospital.
There was absolutely no support from either of the families. It was as if they wanted us to suffer for going against their wish and we toiled hard to make ends meet and even study. Finally, in my 8th grade, my mother passed away. Me and sister were left stranded with noone. But here is where life sent us a miracle. Our neighbour whose husband was also a lawyer, took it upon herself to provide for us and make us study.
And we took her up on the offer seriously and worked hard to get into good colleges in the city. Each of us got into a decent job and now we are earning quite well and taking care of ourself. My sister eventually got married and is blessed with a beautiful kid now. And I have been fortunate enough to have a wonderful boyfriend who’s been my pillar and my rock. I’ll be getting married in the next few months.
Labels inclusive of everything causes nothing but havoc in everyone’s life. It ruined ours for sure but me and my sister stood steadfast in times of extreme turmoil and came out to a beautiful destination in the end. I can’t wait to experience all the adventures that life has in store for me. I believe the best is yet to come and I’m here for it.”
