“We all have a dream. Some dream big, some dream small. In fact, dreams are what keep us motivated and add purpose to our life. My dream is to build (buildings of any sort).
I did my schooling in Perambur. My dad was a mechanical engineer. From my mid-school ages, I desired to dive into construction. Every day was different and my passion for becoming a civil engineer kept burning inside.
Though my father wanted me to choose mechanical engineering, I opted for civil engineering. On the first day of my college, the moment I stepped in, I believed I was ready to build my dream.
When I was in my 3rd year, wherever I noticed bricks and bags of cement, I used to go inside and do a free analysis on ideating something new. I worked really hard, managing my time efficiently and productively in achieving big in the construction industry. I took up contracts of my own from 1989, the year I graduated. God helped me cross all the challenges and hurdles and made me concentrate on my passion. I built a strong foundation for myself, which I believed was a base for my success. When everything was in the proper line, I started my own venture – Creations Promoters.
Earlier, hollow bricks were a very new concept in the construction industry wherein I was the 3rd person to set up this concept in Chennai. I somehow predicted that the idea of using hollow bricks would become a hit in the near future. I worked hard on many unique themes, and concepts and consequently, people started liking the way I take up the project and the map of my entire project plan.
I believe that when we work for ourselves, our families, friends, our work doesn’t get bored. We enjoy our work when we look at it as our passion. I could achieve in my profession because my wife, Asha Marina, took care of my personal well-being and my family. I married my best friend, with whom I fell in love during our college days. We were gifted with two loves. One is our lovely daughter, Preethi Mrinalini, who is a doctor now and the other is our son, Prithvi Christy, who is a successful entrepreneur. Adding to the love, I’m so fortunate to own an extended son, Ajay and an artistic daughter-in-law, Aishwariya. My family has stood throughout my uncertain times and had paved the way to only positivity, warmth and support.
Settling in life is not something that is often heard among civil engineers. Sometimes, I might end up staying in a different location for a long time too. To all those downsides, my angel (wife) stood by my side. My wife and I always made sure to balance our family and profession. She encouraged me to work for my dream wherein she took the responsibility of taking care of our kids, which is why I value her and respect her for how she made me become a king. I barely advise my kids; although I give my children a lot of suggestions and make them experience everything. Parenting is all about guiding our children and not controlling them. I learnt it from my dad and so, I want to be the best of best for my kids and eventually for my family as well.
After completing numerous projects in India, Singapore, Malaysia and globally, I had never been tired of taking up a new one. Be it a small house or a megastructure every civil engineer leaves their mark. We always learn from books, but the knowledge we gain through experience, especially in the construction industry, is immense. A civil engineer’s job is the most challenging among many others. We work from morning to night. I’ve stayed extra hours for so many nights to get the work done. We don’t gauge our work by the number of working hours; we gauge ourselves by the number of challenges faced and the quantum of work done.
Pursue your dream; build your mind to focus on your dream wholeheartedly – there will be a day when you’ll realise that you’re travelling with success; until then work hard!”
