“Music came to me as part of an extracurricular apart from merely academics. In that regard, my parents made me take dancing lessons, piano classes and even vocal training. But music was the one I continued to pursue out of my own choice and it has stuck with me till now.
Even though my roots were in Chennai, I spent all my growing years in different parts of the world. I was raised in the UAE and moved to Singapore for my graduation. After working for a couple of years in the corporate, I felt something amiss inside me and I figured that I needed to do something different.
As I was skimming through opportunities in learning and development, I remembered a friend mentioning the organization “Teach For India” and I got curious to check it out, as the mission of the organization resonated with me. The program intrigued me and I applied for it to get an idea. After a brief run of tests and interviews, I was inducted into the program as a secondary teacher.
To say that this experience changed me for the best would be to say the least. I worked with 7th and 8th graders in government schools in the city and I came to learn a lot about the current public education system and a lot about myself.
As my career took shape, I started to concentrate a bit more on my music too. As a self-taught ukulele singer, I opened an Instagram page on World Music Day just to bring in some more discipline and practice into my life. It eventually opened many doors for me and I started to perform in open mic events all across Chennai. I have also collaborated with other people on many occasions.
As much as I would like to improve myself in the musical scene, I am currently looking to do my ‘Masters in education’. Based on my experience working with government schools, I know that there’s still more to do in the education sector in India and therefore I want to equip myself in order to contribute better and play my part”
