“I hail from a part of Madras that a lot of them would have seen only in movies and televisions – the North Madras. While a lot of them would consider that part of the city as the outskirts, we pride in the fact that this is where the city had it founding stones. The depiction of our area in movies has been accurate of our lifestyle and the harmony we live in, in terms of the houses being close to each other, large families living together, etc.
When I was growing up, it was tough for my mother to ensure that I stay home during holidays and vacation. I used to end up on the streets playing from dawn to dusk with my friends, that is how I picked up a passion for Volleyball too, which has now helped me travel around the country, secure me a job, and meet a lot of wonderful people.
However, it saddens me to see that the 90s kids would probably be the last generation to experience the pleasure of playing on the streets and rolling in the dust. While I spent most of my childhood playing in the vast grounds around my house and my adolescents with friends chatting at a tea stall, a lot of kids these days visit the ground these days to sit together and play PubG. I dream of a day where kids can experience the childhood that we had, explored life, and lead an active life.
I plan on setting up my volleyball coaching in the future where I can get the kids to be more active, play in the field, and work towards building a healthy lifestyle, while also securing at least a few of them a career option. At a time when the nation is ready to look beyond Cricket and encourage other sports, we need the future generations to be more proactive and train for their future and the nation!”
