“I remember back a time when I used to look at buildings in awe and wonder. How they managed to erect huge structures in a matter of a small space and how people lived in such spaces. It fascinated me to no end so it was no wonder that I took up Civil Engineering.
But the reality was a little different than what I had anticipated. When I stepped out of the institution, I was not prepared for how the world saw me. I was considered to be just another run of the mill college produce with a name and a degree. As I set out to look for jobs, it was disheartening to note that there weren’t many.
All I had within myself was a degree and a dream. Education had probably only equipped me to the extent of learning the real concepts behind structures but there was absolutely no practical experience. But I had to attend to the fire inside my belly. I set out to apply for jobs through every possible means. I would narrow down a list of companies and type out an honest message to them via social media.
A couple of companies turned me down saying there were no vacancies. Finally one of them called me in for an interview but I couldn’t answer any of the questions asked. The interviewer surprised me by saying that he liked my honesty and I was taken in for the role. I was appointed as the chief project coordinator where my role involved working as a middle man between the contractor and the designer.
The project commenced and I got to learn the trades of actually constructing a structure in real-time. By the end of that project, the contractor left due to a personal issue and the company requested me to step into the role of a contractor. All the dreams of my younger self got redeemed at that moment and I started to work as a contractor managing over 25-30 employees at a time. Currently, we are doing projects all over the city and the journey is so exciting, to say the least.
I knew somewhere deep down that if I persevered enough, I would be able to land my dream job. As someone who is so passionate about cinema, I believe I have the ability to inculcate some parts of it in my work as and when I can. Because somewhere, we really have to decide on our dreams and ask ourselves the question – “How badly do we want it?”.
