“My name is Arun Pandian and I am a diploma holder in electronics engineering. I hail from the Tiruvannamalai district of Tamil Nadu where my parents are working as farmers. I am a push cart seller selling roasted peanuts in different parts of the city. When I first moved to Chennai, I was holed up in an unhappy job when my friend suggested this business. I have been in this field for more than 6 years and I am happy and content doing this job. It pays me well and takes care of me.
Every day we source around 10 kgs of groundnuts from Sowcarpet. My friend and I, carry the load on a bike to our room wherein, we marinate the peanuts in salt by sprinkling water occasionally. Then, I load it onto my push cart and roast in a pan, wherein they become ready to be served hot and tasty. I sell it for a minimum amount of 10 or 20 rupees but I will be able to sell off the entire lot in a day’s time. I am the boss of my own destiny and I enjoy my work. I travel a minimum distance of 10 kms everyday pushing this cart by foot come rain or shine. Me and my friends stay at a rented house near the marina so we spend most of our time by the beach. I don’t have any major complaints about my life and am largely content and happy with how things are. There isn’t anything in this world that we can’t handle, one just needs the right attitude and mindset to ace the situation”
