“Changing governments and rules have a life altering effect on local businessmen. The vegetable selling business has been passed on through multiple generations of our family. I source fresh vegetables from the Koyembedu market and sell them. Earlier we had stalls on streets in huge numbers all across the city, but the ruling party passed a resolution for us to move our stalls to pave way for roads. We hardly make profits in this business but this is what we are good at. We are hardly trained or educated in any other field so we trudge along here. During chair car festivals and other big celebrations at the temple, all our stalls are displaced to make way for the ever-increasing crowd. With the standard of living constantly getting better, we see the shift from farmers’ market to other prominent grocers in the city. This affects our business because we source vegetables straight from the farmer’s land. We might not have fancy air conditioned shops but our vegetables are some of the healthiest harvests you will ever see.”
