“Comedy is a serious business. Every time we perform a comic act on stage or say a joke, we rehearse it a hundred times, perform it at numerous open mike events, and only then take it for a show. However, all that effort does not guarantee success at all times. In fact, in a few instances, it is the unrehearsed act that gets better reach.
Janaki ma’am was one such attempt. I was irked by the way my sister was creating an uproar over her board exams being cancelled. She was rubbing it in my face as to how I had to stay up all night right from the time of my ninth standard vacation, while she got away from it all due to the lockdown.
I picked a churidar that fits me, chose a name that everyone might relate to, set up the animoji on my phone, and started shooting. It was never the plan to make it a series. But the success and popularity of it, and the video touching over a million views in a short span, motivated me to make a series of videos. I also wanted to make sure it wasn’t a viral video by fluke.
It was during my time in college that my skills as a stage performer were noticed and I was appreciated. While participating at a cultural fest, I got a job to teach kids the art of speaking and expressing themselves on stage. While I enjoyed every bit of it, my family was skeptical as most of my friends were in high paying jobs, and I was into performing arts after pursuing the same degree.
But they soon started attending my events and understood how I am passionate about it and cut for comedy. Now they’re all supportive and pour in their suggestions and feedback while I work on my acts. In fact, Janaki ma’am is a team effort. My mother hands out churidars that fit me, my father handles the camera, and my sister does the voice of the little girl. So, I have had the support of them all, and I am happy that I am able to strike a chord with the people and spread a smile even at tough times like now.”
