“I am from a small city near Nagercoil. After graduating, I pursued a TEFL certification, driven by my passion for the English language. This led me to further certifications, which helped me train students and professionals effectively. My parents were supportive of any career path I chose, and this freedom allowed me to explore my interests.
In 2017, I moved to Chennai to complete my TEFL course and soon settled here after getting married. My husband, a businessman, played a decisive role in starting my entrepreneurship journey. The idea for our business stemmed from a student’s success; one of my trainees scored exceptionally well, inspiring my husband to help me establish a training center in Nungambakkam.
Starting as a freelancer, I coached and trained many students, focusing on American and British accent coaching, helping students study abroad, learn English, clear English language-based exams required to study abroad, and so on. This led us to launch ‘Scholar Overseas.’ Over the years, I have trained more than 10,000 students. We began with a modest 600 sq ft space and now boast a 1500 sq ft facility with 5+ classrooms. From just the two of us, we have grown to a team of 20 dedicated members.
Our journey wasn’t easy, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We faced significant debt as students were not keen on online classes, forcing us to shut down temporarily. However, once the restrictions were lifted, we restarted with determination. Setting up the team again was challenging, but we persevered. Today, 90% of our team are women, and we offer flexible working conditions for our team.
Our success is largely due to word-of-mouth referrals, which account for 60% of our clientele. We have also expanded into medical recruitment and overseas education training. Additionally, we have ventured into other businesses under the Maharani Groups, including food and beverages and homecare nursing services.
Throughout this journey, I have learned the importance of dreaming big and taking risks to achieve those dreams. Despite the struggles and setbacks, my husband and I never gave up. We built something meaningful from an idea, and I am proud of what we have accomplished.
No matter how tough the journey gets, never give up on your dreams. Keep dreaming, keep striving, and take risks to make those dreams a reality.”
