“I’m from Thoothukudi, a small town with a close-knit, conservative family. Growing up, I wasn’t surrounded by people with big city dreams. But one comment changed my course – one of my uncles said not every small town kid could make it to Anna University. That statement fueled me; I decided that I would be one of those kids who did. And I did it. I got into Anna University in Chennai.
My father, a civil contractor, always inspired me. He painted large portraits of film stars, and watching him work fascinated me as a child. My love for art was natural; I used to sketch and paint from a young age. I wanted to pursue fashion, but coming from a conservative family, that was a “no.” So, I chose architecture. Initially, it felt like just a compromise, but slowly, I found myself drawn into the world of design. Architecture wasn’t just about structures; it became a way to express creativity and vision.
Today, my brother and I manage architecture, turnkey, and interior projects together, blending our talents and family values into our work. But my journey took a beautiful turn when I became the community manager at Backyard. Backyard was founded by my senior, and working here is more than a job – it’s a supportive environment where I’m free to explore and grow. I found purpose here, especially after going through a rough patch during COVID. That time, therapy, and a special dog who wandered into my life changed everything. Becoming a dog mom filled a void I didn’t even know I had. Now, I shelter dogs and find comfort and joy in giving them a home.
Often at times when men are prioritized more at work, here, under the guidance of a female founder, I’m encouraged to explore my role and contribute in ways I couldn’t before. My journey is still evolving, but for the first time, it feels like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”
