“For as long as I can remember, I have always loved reading Ponniyin Selvan. It is probably one of the most underrated classics of today, and every time I read, there was something new to discover in it. But it was this passion which eventually brought the world to me.
Being a management graduate leading a job in the civil industry, my life in Chennai was a busy one. But due to my husband’s transfer to Bombay, I had to resign my job to move to a different place. I couldn’t continue my employment here because I had to take care of our 8-year old son, and also, there was the language barrier. I knew it would be difficult to navigate without a stronghold on Hindi. This, pushed me to look at alternative ways to keep myself occupied.
My husband and I took to running. We would jog every day and participate in every city marathon ever held. But after a while, owing to a health condition, I couldn’t pursue that as well. This is when I decided that I want to do something on my own instead of going back to a full-time job.
And that is when my husband suggested that I start to narrate audiobooks for people who didn’t have the time to read through the books. But audiobooks were pretty standard, and I felt I couldn’t add anything more than what was already available. And that is when my husband suggested that I narrate stories in snippets rather than reading it from the book.
The idea sounded exciting, and I penned down the initial script for the introduction of Ponniyin Selvan. After getting the go-ahead from friends and well-wishers, we recorded the first episode of ‘Kadhai Podcast’, which was mixed and arranged by my son. Our very own podcast, which was all in all our family’s joint initiative went live as a birthday gift from my husband, and we have progressed successfully over a year.
Currently, I am in the verge of completing around 200 episodes covering all 5 parts of the series and earned the love and trust of over 60k + odd listeners from all around the world. A bit into our podcast journey, we collaborated with IVM podcasts to record and mix as our son was appearing for the boards. So, every day I would travel for about three hours to the studio to record the podcasts.
Our latest venture is on youtube titled ‘Em Mannin Vendarghal’ which will speak about all the rulers of his great nation starting with Raja Raja Chozhan. So far, the journey has been exhilarating and, I look forward to researching and narrate stories of this beautiful Tamizh nation I call mine.”
