“I started my career afresh at the age of 36. Being a single mother of two, I walked out of a marriage deciding to start a life of my own. Until that point in time, I had never really had any work experience and education was more of a way of self preservation than anything else. So starting afresh in my middle age was hard but I didn’t have much choice left in me. Owing to a little knowledge I had from taking a fashion course in my college, I started a tailoring venture where I stitched the clothes of all my neighbours and friends. As I came to realise later, I had a good interest in this field so I enrolled for a Boutique Design and Fashion Technology course in Tamil Nadu Open University. I used to work late nights to complete my stitching orders and then in the day, leave for my conduct classes. With time, I emerged as a state rank holder in my course and I started to intern at different apparel boutiques. I used to switch boutiques frequently to get a wide exposure on different styles when suddenly, an idea sparked in me to start my own fashion label. Investing all my ideas and my resources, I commenced my own label in a small 10*10 space. It has now grown into a full fledged boutique and we are currently sponsoring for all the celebrities from serials, TV ads and short films. Designed by Sindu has garnered a name of its own and my brand has become a well known name among most media channels. In the four years since I walked out, I would say that life hasn’t been really kind. Being a single mother comes with it’s own challenges – especially when there’s zero support from your own family members. But I couldn’t let that deter me at any cost. I focused all my resources on my work and I’m in a much better place for it. I don’t have a long term goal or a great ambition regarding my venture but I’m really happy that I didn’t rewrote my story the way that I would have wanted it to be.”
