“It’s been 18 years since I lost my first dog Brownie. And the memory of the day that he came into my life is still distinct. I was doing odd jobs near my home around 20 years ago and making something around 50 to 100 rupees a month. A small boy walked up to me one day and asked if I wanted to buy a dog for 30 rupees. I borrowed that money from my aunt who was visiting, and bought that furry bundle of joy. Both my sisters were married by then, and it was their husbands who helped me take Brownie to the vet every time he took ill or wasn’t feeling well.
Years went by, and I spent all that I made to feed him and take good care of him. One day, he was down with a fever, and no amount of treatment could bring him back to normal. With a scream, he breathed his last on my lap. It’s been close to two decades now, and my heart still aches thinking of him.
His loss left a vacuum in my heart, and that’s when I decided to adopt as many furry babies as I could. I now have over 18 dogs and numerous cats. I feed them all and make sure each one of them is taken good care of. Besides that, I also feed a few stray animals at night that live around the Mylapore station. People ridicule me, mock at me, and call me names for being the crazy dog person. But from my experience, I could say that the animals are more loyal and loving than a human could ever be. And if I could live my life all over again, I would do it with them. I decided never to get married as I am sure the person I marry might not understand my passion for my four-legged friends, as even my parents still don’t understand me. But, with the dogs by my side, I never feel lonely.
I work in a few houses, do a lot of odd jobs, and spend all that I earn on feeding them. Since the pandemic, people are deserting their pets, and I’ve rescued them from all over. That’s only increasing the number of stomachs I need to feed. However, a few people have occasionally been sponsoring their food and proving that a few good humans exist too!”
