“My father had a hotel in our hometown Virudhachalam. I was running it along with him initially, but the business went bankrupt so I had to come to the city looking for a job. On the train to Chennai, I was clueless at what I would do once I set foot in this huge city that is so unlike my town. It’s been 20 years since and this city continues to baffle me with the way it has transformed to suit the modern life, without compromising on it’s traditions. People from all walks of life find a home in Madras. This city embraces everyone just how it took me into its arms when I set foot in Central Station as a confused youngster. When I had moved here, I did not have a definitive plan, so I stayed at my brother’s place and started looking for a job. I found employment with the Pothys group and served them for over 16 years. I live in Mambalam now and spend my days of retirement in prayer and with my friends.I was an atheist all my life until I met Dr. M. S. Udayamurthy who spoke to me in detail about the power of faith and how it is important for all of us to place our faith in something, and that pushed me towards being a more religious person. Madras, I would say, is the perfect example for a city that flies high while still holding on to the ground where it’s rooted.”
