“Vaali’s poetry book inspired me to write poems and till today I aspire to write something like the “Row Row Row Your Boat,”rhyme that we all learned in nursery! I started my career as a video editor around the year 2010 and worked with almost all the early Tamil YouTube channels, from PutChutney to Aravind SA’s Madrasi Da.While my stint in the entertainment world did begin with video editing, it is my love for poetry thathas kept me going. Throughout my journey, I’ve made it a point to not react to criticism ornegativity, i.e., if someone walks up to me and says that they don’t find my style ofpoetry appealing or interesting, I don’t punish myself for it or become apologetic, because my poemsare my way of expressing my thoughts and emotions. It is not necessary that all creative works appeal to every section of the audience.
Aravind SA, is a close friend and he suggested that I participate in a slam poetry event. When I paidheed to his words and participated, I realized that I enjoyed doing it. I then went on to partner withthe Prakriti Foundation and participated in ‘Poetry with Prakriti’. I did a few performancesfor them as part of a series that was called #FindingIshvar in which I performed atvarious metro stations and the central railway station. I worked with a government school in Kodambakkam and taught kids poetry. One of my works, a poetry film, titled “அைலேய – OhWave!,” was selected at the Motion Pictures Film Festival in 2018 and I received a lot ofappreciation for it too!
Poetry readings, performances at Chennai’s poetry festival, events like the U.S. Consulate’s Poetry Slam and places like The Brew Room or theWriters Cafe give me the opportunity to meet and engage with like-minded people andinstill in me a sense of satisfaction.
My dream is to see a time when our audience willingly consumes poetry as entertainment, just the way they sign up for movies and stand up comedy shows. For now, most people see itas a serious medium of expression. While that might not be an immediate development, I wantto see it happen in the future and I will do my bit towards it!”
