“There is still no cure for Coronavirus so the messages that are circulating on whatsapp about relying on sanitizers alone for washing your hands, eating garlic, turmeric or tamarind to reduce symptoms are not true. However, all these can help you build your general immunity. Similarly the news that India will not be affected by Coronavirus because of the onset of summer and high temperature is completely untrue. Almost every continent in the world has positive cases and this proves that temperature is not a factor.
I also read a flyer recently that spoke about your stomach acids killing the virus, because of which one should consume more water. However, one could not be more wrong.
The best way to avoid the spread of the virus is to practice social distancing. Whether you have the symptoms or not, when you stay indoors you not only avoid the possibility of catching the virus, but also make sure you do not transmit it. However, if you do have symptoms, do not panic. Instead, contact healthcare providers who can direct you with the right steps.
Another popular myth doing the rounds is that only the elderly and the infants are at high risk and this might not affect young people. However everyone can be affected by the virus, while the elderly are obviously more vulnerable given their pre-existing health issues.
As a medical professional, I’d advise everyone not to visit the hospital unless it is absolutely necessary because they’d be putting themselves at risk and also increasing the burden on the already overwhelmed hospital staff.
If you’re a breast-feeding mother who is sick or has symptoms of the virus, make sure you wear a mask and follow basic hygiene to avoid infecting the baby. For others, make sure you do not wear a mask unless you’re sick or taking care of a sick person. Everyone wearing a mask only creates a fake demand and makes supply to those who need it, difficult.
In short, the only thing you need to do is to make sure you stay indoors, not panic and wash your hands often with soap and water. Also, make sure you do not spread fake news around!”
