“In 2012, my life felt like it was falling apart. It had been two years since I left my corporate job to venture into the niche field of Emotional Intelligence, but my growth had stagnated. Not to mention, my wife was fully pregnant then and the financial commitments that awaited us felt intimidating. Naturally, the question I got asked most was ‘why’- why did an MBA graduate, settled well into the banking industry with a beautiful family suddenly take this decision?
Until then, all my boxes were checked per expectations but deep down, I knew I wasn’t happy. I always had aspirations to venture into entrepreneurship while contributing positively to people’s lives. So knowing that my strengths were understanding people and communicating effectively, I decided to equip myself with the relevant training to become an Emotional Intelligence coach. But even after that, I couldn’t get enough work. People saw these abstract concepts as either unimportant or felt professional education on these aspects wasn’t necessary.
Within two years, the hardships reached a breaking point where I had almost given up. But thankfully, my brother stepped in to provide the chaos, a little clarity. We worked out the minimum amount I’d need to survive, post which he asked me if I was willing to let go of all my hard work for that. The little pep talk did have a huge impact and it steered my life back in the right direction. I started investing even more time and pushed myself relentlessly, despite the uncertainty.
Eventually, I saw it all pay off when my words started leaving a deep impact amongst the listeners. My work has allowed me to engage with different professionals across the hierarchy and resolve their emotional baggage. In fact, some of my best moments have been when I cracked open strict senior heads originally considered tough. Most of them were moved to tears after finally being able to identify the root cause for all their stress that had been accumulating all these years.
Even financially I was able to witness an immense rise. Today I’m grateful that I took the path less travelled for it has made all the difference!”
