“I was born with 3 kidneys and my right leg was attached to my back. This, alongside a deformed urinary bladder was the starting point of all my surgeries. And with the first one done just 18 days after my birth, it hasn’t been the easiest of rides. After the initial operation, the doctors clearly specified that urination would involve attaching an external tube, every single time. Even a task as simple as that had a process and had to be completed before a specific time daily, failing which the toxin accumulation in my body could prove fatal.
For a growing up child, all this meant intense bullying and shaming. Moreover, my mother had to carry me to school every day, sit in class and bring me back until I was grown enough to use a walking stick. Even post that phase, I was demoted by 2 years, just so that my sister can study in the same grade whilst taking care of me. It made the other students view me differently and call me all kinds of names. Adding to the misery was my body giving off a peculiar stench, further reducing my chance of making friends.
But despite the testing circumstances, what keeps me going is my mother. Her endurance and smile is my ultimate reminder to live! Another blessing has been in the form of a best friend who I met in high school. He introduced me to cycling and made me an enthusiast ever since!
In hindsight, it’s the people around me who have helped me focus on the positive aspects to life rather than just pondering over the question of “why me?”. I mean, it is still a tiring process to consume 33 tablets a day or go without salt on any food item but they make it all worth it! And due to these people, my only wish today is to live. Sounds rather simple, but just one shot at life with good health would mean the world to us all.
Besides this, another priority is to motivate people with my stories. In my 20 years here, my ultimate learning has been that no matter the situation, a will always finds a way!”
