“When you’re a twin, life is one exciting journey. Your best friend, confidant and family is all the same person, who’s with you 24/7. There is never a dull moment at home, except of course, the times she gets better grades. She then becomes my nemesis for a brief bit.
But beyond the fun, us being twins brought in a great deal of relief to our mother. As a single parent taking complete care, knowing that we both have each other at all times, reduced her panic over our safety. Growing up, it also gave us the vigour to operate independently, without constantly relying upon, for support. She, in fact, recalls and laughs over an incident where we fled off in a known autorickshaw to attend a birthday party when we were just six!
Now, whenever we meet anyone, a common reaction we evoke is curiosity. People are often intrigued by the actuality of two similar-looking individuals coexisting and start questioning us almost instantly- about how things work at home on a day-to-day basis, spottable differences and more. While it’s a lot of fun answering them, we also use it as an opportunity to confuse everyone and pull off harmless pranks.
And beneath the surface too, the sisterhood we share is truly magical. With very similar tastes and interests, there has never been a significant difference of opinion. Even when there is, it’s hardly a matter of minutes. The only contrasting factor, persona-wise, is that I’m an extrovert while she isn’t. Her vivaciousness comes out only within close circles and I thoroughly make use of it by bossing her around, every time, as the elder sister.
Today, however, after so many years, we live apart in different cities and it has set in a rush of mixed feelings. Although she is just a call away, not having her right next to me, does evoke a sense of longing. But I’m sure that no matter where life takes us, or how old we get we would drop everything in an instant to be there for each other. After all, isn’t that what sisterhood is truly about?”
