“The Movie Roja was released a little after I was born. Even though I didn’t understand a word of the film I remember being thoroughly enchanted by the tunes! Since then AR Rahman’s music has inspired this fan to make some major life-changing decisions!
In my childhood, however, despite the training, I had immense stage fright which hindered me from expressing my talent to the world. It wasn’t until the last year of college, where my friend had to literally push me to go up on stage, that I gave my first-ever performance. It was a huge music competition and guess what? ‘I won first place!’
Soon after that, I got married and started taking up small gigs and dubbing assignments sparsely, while pursuing a full-time corporate career. Three whole years flew by until I attended the ‘Nenje Ezhu’ concert in Chennai. It changed something within me and made me realise that music was in fact, my ultimate calling. So I quit my job and with the money I had saved up till then, enrolled in KM Music Conservatory- all while being fully pregnant!
But I remember women giving me flak for trying to pursue my interest and not having my child as my only priority. It was concerning! Added to that was the fear of whether my voice would change as pregnancy is known to spike up a woman’s hormone levels.
Today, however, I am a mother to a beautiful baby boy, and a singer who got her debut playback opportunity in the Kollywood industry in 2017. It wouldn’t have been possible without the relentless support of my family. They help me practice every day without worry and take up various performing opportunities. I still have a long way to go, but whatever little I have achieved, I owe it to them. They made me break the myth that women, post-marriage, cannot go in pursuit of their dreams!”
