Celebrating the #Taanakkaran of TamilNadu, 4
“Though my father was into weaving and agriculture, he never refused me on getting into sports. I had been a boxer for 4 years from my middle-school-age till I joined the Armed Reserve Police.
While pursuing coaching at YMCA for boxing, I had won medals and prizes which drove me on applying for Railways. But unfortunately, I could attend the exams for the job since my father passed away. I, then, cleared my selections and thus my Police journey began.
I was 26 when I stepped into police training in 1984. Thereafter, I was posted in various parts of Chennai in various departments such as Traffic, Crime, Accidents and so on.
None of the policemen will stay in one station for a long time. Alike others, I was transferred to more than 10 stations in my 33 years career. I retired in 2017.
One of the biggest challenges that policemen face is that we can’t eat and sleep on time. As we can’t predict what incidents or issues will arise next, we were instructed to be awake and aware all the time. Immediate programs will be booked, unnoticing schedules will be fixed. Last-minute hassles are so common in most cases. We can’t sleep well when some conflicts reach the flashpoint.
Some accident cases would be so disturbing that would put us in exhaustive trauma. Accidents are common but when we directly deal with them which include babies or young kids, & the helpless position leaves us in a stressful situation. I see that the parts of the human body are horribly scattered elsewhere with red paints on the roads and paths. Such incidents fetch so much distress to mental health.
Thus, every day would end up being unplanned and unexpected.”
