“I have the habit of answering every call that I get, and that’s how I answered that unknown call too. Apparently, due to some error, my number was given to migrants from Jharkhand by a helpline.
The man on the other end of the line was hoping to get some food for his family while he is stuck in Chennai. I was moved. I told him that I am not the person he was hoping to reach, but I will make sure he gets the help he needs. I posted the ask on Facebook and a team of volunteers made sure that they got the ration that will last them a while. In the meantime, a lot of donors started sending over ration and money to sponsor these people. So, we went on to offer that man a little more food supplies than planned initially. What he said at the time was an eye-opener. He shared that a few other families that are now homeless could use some food too. In his words, “the supplies I have will last me a while, but they need it. For now, I cannot horde and feast while I know that there are those who are starving.” That was humanity redefined! He was thinking of his fellow beings when his survival was under question! We have been able to help over 400-migrant workers so far with food, and hope we continue to serve many more.
I have been a volunteer with Daan Utsav for a long-time now, and working with people always teaches us newer lessons on life. There was this 8-year-old girl who was observant of our activities and asked what we were up to. When we explained, she brought her friends along and volunteered to donate her sleep for her mother. Her neighborhood had water problems, and the mothers had to wake up around 4 in the morning to fill in water. These kids were willing to forgo their sleep for a month to let their mothers sleep. You don’t have to be wealthy to give. You just need a heart that is willing to share! And at a time of crisis like now, only our willingness to share will save humanity.”
