“As a student of medicine, I had the best possible opportunities. I finished my graduation in Chennai and flew to London to finish my post graduation. Coming back to India post my studies, I found that the health scene in India needed more change and innovation. My mom prodded me a saying that since I was now well established, I needed to do something to the society. I started to look out for opportunities to help people with my skills and joined hands with Rotary.
One of the biggest projects I conducted here was to help people who were suffering from paralysis. It usually goes that these community members often are the sole bread winners for the family and their income is hardly enough to look after the day to day operations for their homes. So connecting with Rotaract, I started conducting operations free of cost to people and helping them lead a better life. Honouring my work, I received an award from our late ex-president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam sir. Shortly after the procedure, these people are sent to a rehabilitation centre where they are trained to perform day to day activities.
Inspired by this, I started my own rehabilitation centre in the name of Hamsa Rehab. The second biggest project was to help children who suffered from congenital diseases. Children often fall prey to these diseases due to various factor and when this came to me, I pitched in with my team to conduct operations free of cost to kids. Some patients who have severe spinal cord or Brachial plexus injury following accidents suffer severe pain and we performed a rare surgery to relive their pain. As part of an awareness for patients who have spine surgery we started conducting trekking expeditions to help my patients conquer their fears.
All of us, irrespective of our place and age, have an innate ability to create a humungous impact on this world. And we should take it up as a means to pay forward the blessings we receive from life. My mother has and continues to be an amazing influence in my life for bringing this side of me. And I hope each and every one of us take up this responsibility and give back to the world.”
