“I spent the initial years of my life with my grandparents in a village near Tanjore. My upbringing was heavily influenced by my time in the village. It was probably because of this that I never believed in the education system and rather believed that it is the values you hold that shape and define you. So it goes without saying that studies didn’t exactly excite me. Years went by and in my seventh grade, I took up something which I didn’t expect myself to fall in love with, music.
The first among the people who moulded me, was my Mridangam guru. Fascinated by the ‘Mridangam’ at school, I enrolled for classes under my guru. I learnt a lot under him until it was time to prioritize my exams over it.
Soon after my schooling, my tryst with the piano happened and yet again, life threw the best possible mentor my way, Mr. K. N. Ramanathan. He defined music for me and I learnt about the appreciation of art and life in general.
I knew I wanted to make a name for myself in music but enrolling in an engineering college seemed like a compulsion to my parents. While the course offered nothing of value to me, I used the opportunity to explore the avenues presented to me. I started performing in cultural programs in other colleges and the response was humongous. In the hunt for certifications to enhance my music skills, I stumbled upon a sound engineering course. It was one of the most crucial turning points in my life. I completed my certification course with my mentor and interned with him in his studio. Since I had observed the way the cine-industry functions, I knew that it wouldn’t give any guarantee of financial stability. So, while looking out for other options, the concept of entrepreneurship struck me!
Then, Raghavi and I, who met during the course and connected instantly, set out to build on a shared dream of bringing ‘Sahanas’ to life. From a small rented apartment in an old building to owning our own workspace with its own recording studio, it’s been 4 years of rewards! A lot of plans are underway and we hope to grow organically and authentically like it is meant to be.”
