“I moved from Orissa with my uncle in search of work and I have been here since then. I was originally employed in a piping company and then moved to the railways for a permanent job. Being at the hub of the city’s most visited place, I am not blind to what goes on around here. But more appalling than anything is the reaction of the public. They either want to flee the scene or continue to remain oblivious. College goers and school kids risk their lives for the momentary pleasure of riding the train at the foot board. Chennai has recorded the maximum number of accidents in the railway tracks. There is no one to be held responsible other than the person themselves but the crowd does little to help in this regard. They have to come forward and speak up! We have become a dog-eat-dog world so in the rush of the hour, you would rather fiddle with your phone than advise the school boy about the dangers of foot boarding in the train but this is where the crowd as a whole, should step up. The rules need to become more stringent and fines need to be levied; and where the authorities fail, the people need to stand up. If I was in their place, I would do it without thinking twice. I become privy to so many accidents where someone tries to cut through the tracks amidst an approaching train. My hearts goes to the parents and the loved ones of these victims. And seeing such incidents, one would think that the general public would learn a lesson but to no avail. People continue to cut through tracks in a constant hurry to get to their destination but fall hopeless prey to split second delays and end up losing their lives. I have a son too and it is my responsibility to bring him up in the right path. So in the interest of the general public, we would only develop as a country when we start to become more aware and look out for one another.”
