Celebrating the #Taanakkaran of TamilNadu, 10
“I remember the time I entered the police force. My dad had retired as a police officer and it was hard to provide for us as a family – since we were a set of five siblings. I was studying BA when in the last year, there was a requirement from my end to join the police force. I came down to Chennai with just Rs. 10 in my pocket. I used to live in a hostel here and I used to appear for all the selection processes that were lined up.
In my batch around 800 of us got selected and we were sent to Pollachi for training. It was a tough ordeal to survive training because it was quite rigorous – from running the grounds to undertaking training in other forms. At the end of the training, I was posted in the department of Armed Reserve where I was serving as a guard for different government officials.
Shortly after that, I was posted in traffic. I had the opportunity of travelling to Delhi for undertaking this training. It was a fun period while working in the traffic department. I also trained a lot of subordinates here.
Post this, I worked in Intelligence and here, we worked on different cases to help nab accused members. Since I had a good network of journalists, I was often the spokesperson for all the important cases that made it to the main news. It got to a point where even senior officials started to call out for me to resolve serious and mainstream issues with the news channels and newspapers.
But after giving my service for 36 years, I decided to give my VRS last year. It’s been an eventful journey and I left the police force as a sub inspector. For what it’s worth, the police force has taught me so much about life. But after a certain period of time, it came to a point where my position didn’t garner the respect and authority it mandated. It started to become futile to demand that from my seniors who were younger to me.
My only suggestion for the younger generation who are aspiring to enter the police force is to work hard and be sincere to the authority they have been bestowed with. It’s so hard to do the right thing but it will be the only thing that will save us till the last breath.”
