“I completed my MBBS and chose Respiratory Medicine for my specialization. My parents were keen on me pursuing Obstetrics and Gynecology but I had no inclination towards them as I found the subjects saturated. Air pollution, smoking, occupational hazards and pigeon exposure are hazardous to human health and with the outbreak of Corona virus it shows that people need to be more aware, preventive measures must be known and basic health education is mandatory. So, along with a junior of mine, I run a page to create awareness about the same. We also conduct free lung function testing camps for poor people, college students and apartment residents along with our college department. I have been oriented towards service from a very early age and that was one of the reasons I choose medicine. Not many people are aware that specialists for lung problems like Respiratory Medicine exist. They go to general practitioners and don’t get treated with proper inhaler techniques. Old patients with respiratory failure and end stage diseases who come for treatment are the ones I yearn to make a better life for. I want to give them hope and improve their quality of life because every human being matters. There are days when life throws in a wringer and I have to declare a patient dead; such heart wrenching moments have made me question if medicine is really the field I want to be in, but then, thinking of all the other lives I can improve pushes me forward with a glint of hope. I have also been teaching breathing exercises, yoga, pulmonary rehabilitation and this has been largely benefitting a lot of people. I know deep down, that my love for humanity is the reason I chose medicine; more than a stream of education, it has come to become my life. I love what I do and I hope to strive for the best.”
