“You won’t know how strong you are until being strong is the only option left.” This has been my mantra, guiding me through life’s twists and turns. I’m Lavanya, an Operations Manager at a renowned talent management company, and this is my story of resilience and determination.
I come from a modest family in Chennai. Like many parents, mine wanted me to pursue a safe, stable job. However, I had a vision that aligned with their dreams, which allowed me to carve my own path. Pursuing a degree in Tourism and Travel Management in Chennai, I was captivated by the vast potential of the industry.
Fresh out of college, I began my career in the hospitality sector, moving on to production houses, and eventually exploring HR, admin, and IT. Each experience added a new layer to my professional journey, but the path was far from smooth.
Toxic work cultures tested my patience and resilience. As a woman, I often found myself walking a tightrope, balancing the need to preserve my dignity with the necessity of staying employed. For a while, I hopped from one workplace to another, searching for a healthier environment. Amidst these struggles, I was fortunate to encounter a few incredible ex-colleagues who saw my potential. They motivated me to pursue an MBA and helped me push my boundaries.
The lockdown became a turning point. I used the time to sharpen my technical skills in digital and social media, equipping myself with tools essential for the modern workplace. Throughout this journey, my parents stood as my pillars of support. My father, despite a severe leg injury from a road accident, worked tirelessly to ensure our family’s well-being. His resilience inspired me to give back.
At 21, I fulfilled a lifelong dream for my parents: building them their first home, solely owned by them. It was a proud moment for any middle-class family. Today, five years later, as I reflect on my struggles – financial, personal, and professional – I feel immense gratitude. These challenges have shaped me into a stronger, more patient, and enduring person. Life has taught me that courage diminishes half our fears, and with it, anything is possible.”
