“When I was elected as the student body union chairwoman during my five-year integrated course in Political Science at Pondicherry University, it felt like a dream come true. I had always been passionate about politics and had strong political views and beliefs. Winning the student union election was a significant milestone, and it caught the attention of many well-wishers and the DMK party.
Encouraged by their support, I decided to run for the ward counsellor election in 2022, in Pollachi, which is my native. At 25, I became the youngest woman to win the position, securing an impressive 86% of the votes. Representing DMK was natural for me because their ideology aligned perfectly with my values and aspirations.
However, I quickly realized that the reality of politics outside the university was far more challenging. I am a straightforward person, and the constant conflicts and power struggles did not suit my personality. Despite these challenges, I remained dedicated to my community. In just ten months, I accomplished everything I had promised in the manifestation. Yet, for the sake of my mental peace, I chose to resign from my post.
I was urged to become stronger politically and so I began preparing for the UPSC exams at Shankar IAS Academy. It was here that I met my husband, who shared similar political and personal beliefs. He was a communist, and our common ground brought us closer together. Our relationship blossomed, and we decided to get married in the Periyar style, a Dravidian wedding that reflected our shared values. Dravidian marriage is nothing but having no custom rituals but focusing on the bride and groom taking vows to each other, which is so beautiful and meaningful, is what we feel. Our families, thankfully, were supportive after we explained our decision to them.
Now, my husband and I are both preparing for the UPSC exams, even as he continues with his business and I work towards my Ph.D. I often reflect on my journey and the lessons I have learned along the way. To the younger generation, I say: think scientifically and question everything. Don’t accept things blindly; voice your opinions and follow your instincts. Have your own political ideology and stay engaged in politics. It is through these efforts that we can create meaningful change.
I have made bigger decisions in my life, which is what made me a stronger and better person.”
