“With money considered the definition of success, the American Dream is still enticing to a large section of people living in India. Moving to the States or any country in general, for education, is preferred more for climbing up the status ladder than knowledge.
And that mindset naturally portrays the idea that residing in a foreign country is a piece of cake with no downsides to it at all. But, this couldn’t be further from the truth, for the pressures that ride on us, weigh in much heavier, even at the slightest slip. With skyrocketing student loans, societal expectations, and intense competition, students here are far, far away from their comfort zones, and have to navigate single-handedly through everything.
But one thing that this experience can guarantee one, is growth of character. Now in my case specifically, my love for aeronautics blossomed after hearing a speech made by the late Dr Abdul Kalam in my school. Obsessed with planes and flying since then, I decided to pursue my passion and explore the field wherever the knowledge felt ample. And this move is what led me to the States, eventually getting me to fall in love with my course, with each passing day. But more than just the textbook aspect to it, living here has taught me so much about myself while additionally helping me gain a newfound respect for my homeland.
Now, there couldn’t have been a better year for self-reflection, and other perspectives than 2020, especially with the onset of the Corona Virus. It has in its own way toppled a lot of lives physically and emotionally and I’m a victim too. Having lost my mom this year and dad, a couple of years ago, it has made sure to increase the void within and exacerbate a sense of loneliness. Yet, with the hope of a better future, I believe my quest for knowledge will eventually aid my aim to become an Aerospace pilot. Healing does take time, but I’m positive I’ll bounce back stronger!”
