“No matter the distance, no matter the difference, if two people have this thumping feeling within called love, it does make you do crazy things.
Vikram and I have known each other for over fourteen years now, but it wasn’t all mushy from the start. In fact, I vividly remember disliking him in school. But vanity got the best of us when the cold stares we exchanged got confused for glances of attraction.I presumed that he was attracted to me and vice versa. And that presumption got us to eventually become friends.
However, what’s life without a few bumps right? Ours started immediately post schooling with two colleges at extreme ends of the city. And if those four years of distance weren’t enough already, he moved to the Netherlands for his masters and we literally were a continent apart!
Here’s where we thought our connection would gradually fade away. But thankfully it didn’t! In fact, it brought us closer. We started catching up almost every weekend throughout our college years, thereby establishing an unspoken sense of love. We didn’t confess our feelings but knew we swept each other off our feet.
Now, there did emerge a gap after he left for the Netherlands, especially with the difference in priorities. Adding to it, the job prospects for his field weren’t bright in our country and I was sure of my decision to work in India whilst taking care of my single mother.
So with that dilemma in place we knew, there were sacrifices involved. That’s when Vikram voluntarily took the leap to shift to India and take care of his family business. It was indeed a big move but one that completely sealed our relationship.
And today, that decision is what has taken us through five years of marital bliss. With both of us inching towards our thirties, nothing has changed, despite us being polar opposites by nature. I owe it fully to the fact that we are each other’s friend first. The respect and understanding that comes with it has always enhanced the fun vibe we share while also giving us enough space to be.
We also have a two-year-old daughter adding further to the joy. Yes, there were obstacles and sacrifices, but it’s all about finding that one person to sail through together.”
