Celebrating the #Taanakkaran of TamilNadu, 2
“Becoming police wasn’t in my genes but it turned out to grow as my passion, interest, job and God.
I was 21 when I decided to become a police officer. Kalambur (Thiruvannamalai District) was my hometown wherein I completed my bachelors in History.
Those days, there wasn’t a methodology for noting down the birth date and time. So, my family and I weren’t sure when I was born. Teachers had a few exercises which decide our age approximately.
Sounds fishy? But yes, weird things happen in the villages.
I joined as a Grade 2 police officer in 1976 and was promoted to Grade 1 officer in 1983. After a decade of serving as a government officer, in 1994, I became the head constable in one of the stations in Tamil Nadu.
Soon, in 1999, I was promoted to a Sub-Inspector. But promotion to a few prominent postings was accomplished only after successful completion of examinations.
I retired in 2012 as an Inspector in the Ariyalur District.
I’ve been on duty for almost 36 years, served for our state, and been transferred round the clock to different cities. Surprisingly, I discovered that I’ve worked in 36 stations so far and that I have never got the chance to stay in one station for more than a year.
Our jobs, roles, places and the environment keeps changing but our responsibilities i.e. to serve the people remains the same.
While I was working in Ariyalur, I noticed that the land and the people were so dry and dumped. People over there rarely survived the scarcity of resources. Now that it has developed a little. But a decade back, taking the position in such a starved town seemed very horrible as they would always have a problem ready in hand. Though it seemed sad, our jobs were tightly blocked which didn’t allow us to take breaks.
As we all know, being a police officer is quite a challenging job since we will not find enough time for our family and thus, rarely spend time with kids.
My wife has never made me regret the fact that I wasn’t able to spend quality time with my kids as she owns the entire credit of carrying them up as two successful citizens.
I have retired for a decade now and again, I’m back to serving my people in the way of carrying out agriculture.”
